Palmetto St Augustine Sod Care
Post Installation Care
Sod will be watered as soon as installation is complete, ensuring the soil is thoroughly moistened.
First 2 weeks:
Watering is the most critical aspect of new grass establishment after completing your installation. The soil underneath the new grass needs to stay saturated for a minimum of 2 weeks post-installation. Typically, the first week of newly planted grass will need 1-1.5" of water applied daily, especially during hotter days. Ensuring the topsoil doesn't dry out during this time will help ensure strong, deep-root development, minimize stress areas, and encourage overall top-performance in the new lawn. Inadequate watering can result in new grass severely stressing and dying within days. Inconsistent watering and non-uniform coverage may result in stress spots throughout the lawn. The ideal time to water will be early morning/ before 9am or after 7pm. If using a sprinkler, have it running for about 10-15 minutes. Give supplemental water to stressed areas by applying focused water by hand with a hose & hose-end sprayer.
Gradual Reduction during week 3 & 4:
Gradually reduce watering frequency as the sod establishes roots, aiming for every other day during week 3 and every third day during week 4, and finally to once or twice a week as part of a regular watering schedule.
Wait to Mow and wait to fertilize:
Avoid mowing the new sod until it has established roots, typically after about 3-4 weeks. When mowing the first time maintain a height of 2.5-3 inches. Never remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade. Do not fertilize until roots are fully established.
Care after establishment:
Palmetto maintenance differs by each season of the year, however, it should generally be mowed between 2–2.5 inches in height. You will mow less in the fall and winter months, so leave your Palmetto lawn slightly higher than normal at this time. It will encourage deeper root growth for winter. Do this by adjusting the mower height settings up one notch. Your Palmetto will also need about one inch of water per week including rainfall. Because this grass performs so well in the shade, be careful not to overwater it. Shade and oversaturated soil creates ideal environments for disease outbreaks.
